Miguel Lopez de Legazpi dispatched an expedition, commanded by Martin de Goiti and Juan de Salcedo, from Panay to explore Luzon and the bustling port of Maynila. Goiti sought a friendly pact with Rajah Sulayman, the town's ruler, but a clash erupted, leading to the incineration of Maynila.
