The British Occupation of Manila (1762 - 1764)

The British occupation of Intramuros from 1762 to 1764, occurring during the Seven Years' War, was a significant turning point in Philippine history. This period shattered the perception of Spanish invincibility and contributed to larger uprisings leading up to 1896.

The British were primarily interested in Manila as a trade center, particularly with China. A ransom agreement spared the city from further devastation, although resistance led by Lieutenant Governor Simón de Anda y Salazar and Filipino troops confined British control to the nearby areas of Manila and Cavite. When the conflict in Europe concluded in February 1763, the British forces agreed to return Manila by March 1764, officially ending the occupation as they departed from Manila and Cavite in early April 1764.
